In the last years the urology team has worked with a range of clinical
problems encompassing many pathologies and across the whole age range of people
affected by them.
Oncological urology is a main interest of the team, the most frequent operations
being "nerve sparing" radical prostatectomy for localised neoplasm of
the prostate, radical cystectomy inclusive of a continent ileal orthotopical
tank (Paduan Ileal Bladder) and radical nephrectomy for renal neoplasms.
Destructive oncological surgery has recently undergone a significant
transformation, due to a greater sensibility towards functional and
reconstructive problems. Anatomical-surgical and physiopathologic studies have
made possible the development of new surgical techniques, fine-tuned to maintain
erectile function and urinary continence.
Traditionally, the local urology school has specialised in surgery for
congenital malformations and reconstructive surgery.
The clinic maintains an active interest in the developing field of Paediatric
urology where improvements have been made in the reconstructive techniques for
the most serious forms of hypospadias of the ureter bladder junction and the
pyelo-ureteral joint. All these operations have always been carried out
successfully by the urology team of the Clinic.
At Morgagni Clinic the endoscopic resection of the prostate, bladder neoplasms
and endoscopic "cold" urethrotomy are common therapeutic treatments.
A direct offspring of this new technique is the endourology. This was originally
a non-surgical treatment of urinary tract calculosis but is indicated today for
a wider range of disorders such as obstruction of the urinary tract (stenosis of
the ureter, yelo-ureteral joint, caliceal collector) and superficial neoplasms
of the ureter and the intra-renal collecting system
To treat these pathologies the Morgagni Clinic has a fully equipped endourology clinical room, complete with an extra-corporeal renal lithotrity.
